Kilimanjaro Trekking in Tanzania

In northern Tanzania, visitors will find Kilimanjaro National Park covering an area of 652 sq. miles. The area is a UNESCO world heritage site and home to the famous Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa and a dormant volcano some 5,895m above sea level.

Kilimanjaro is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world and is located 27 miles/1 hour north of the town of Moshi and 210 miles from the Serengeti National Park.

Commonly associated with climbers scaling the mountain, Kilimanjaro NP is a hidden gem for wildlife safari visitors and much quieter than the Serengeti or Ngorongoro Crater as most visitors are focused on climbing, instead of the abundant wildlife. Explore all Kilimanjaro Route

Meru Mountain

Mount Meru is the first sight you can see when reaching Arusha town. The mountain is with its 4,566 m (14,990 feet) Tanzania’s second-highest peak after Kilimanjaro and the fifth-highest in Africa. The mountain has two peaks: Meru Summit, the highest point, and Ash Cone, an additional peak inside the crater which was formed after a more recent volcanic activity. On clear days one can see Great Rift Valley and Kitumbeini and Gelai volcanoes in the western part, and in the east its neighbor Mount Kilimanjaro with Kibo and Shira Plateau.

The peak can be ascended in 3 or 4 days on the Momela Route  It is the only way up to the summit. You don’t need any technical equipment for the climb but you will need to be prepared for the altitude gain. The best thing you can do is to take your time for proper acclimatization.

Oldonyo Lengai Mountain

Just short of 3000 meters above sea level, Ol Doinyo Lengai, the sacred mountain of the Masai towers above the remote plains south of Lake Natron in Tanzania’s Arusha region.

The local Masai respect it as the Holy Mountain of God and home to their God Ngai, geologists study the mountain for its unique lava and travelers attempt to capture its mystic aura in photographs. Now and then, the imposing giant starts to grumble, sending tremors across the lands all the way to Kenya. Recent activities monitored by geologists show, that an eruption can be expected soon.
